Clarification on the Holy Father's remarks in a recent documentary

Clarification sent from Rome through the Nunciature regarding the Holy Father’s remarks in the recent documentary Francesco.  Pope Francis has personally directed that these clarifications be offered in order to ensure an authentic understanding of his words.

The documentary used two separate comments made by the Holy Father, each over a year ago.  Mr. Afineevesky, the creator of the documentary, edited the comments into a single response without the necessary context, which has resulted in confusion among the Faithful regarding Church teaching on homosexuality.

In the edited comment, Pope Francis was speaking strictly in a pastoral manner to the need, within the family, for a son or daughter with homosexual orientation to never be discriminated against.  This was expressed in the Post-Synodal Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, in which the Holy Father explained, “During the Synod, we discussed the situation of families whose members include persons who experience same-sex attraction, a situation not easy either for parents or for children.  We would like before all else to reaffirm that every person, regardless of sexual orientation, ought to be respected in his or her dignity and treated with consideration, while 'every sign of unjust discrimination' is to be carefully avoided, particularly any form of aggression and violence.  Such families should be given respectful pastoral guidance, so that those who manifest a homosexual orientation can receive the assistance they need to understand and fully carry out God's will in their lives.”

Subsequently in the documentary, the Holy Father spoke about different countries around the world in which the State seeks to justify civil unions in order to regularize various situations of cohabitation, driven by the necessity to regularize economic matters between persons, such as ensuring health care, for example.  He went on to explain that these different situations must be examined and evaluated according to their particular circumstances.  This makes clear that Pope Francis was not speaking on the doctrine of the Church but rather specific State provisions.
